Types of Electric Griddles

There are a few characteristics that make up all electric griddles, and each griddle will come with its own perks for owning that specific one. But, in short, an electric griddle is composed of a flattened cooking surface and evenly distributed heat across the surface. An electric griddle is often preferred for cooking the aforementioned breakfast foods, but they are so versatile that you can make hamburgers and tender steaks on them as well! Typically constructed of heavy aluminum and stainless steel, griddles are durable and high quality cooking apparatuses but are lightweight enough to put them in storage and take them back out again whenever you need them.

There are two main types of griddles:

Electric Griddles

A basic electric griddle is exactly what was described above: flat surface, evenly distributed heat. There are controls on a griddle that let you set the cooking temperature to whatever you desire. Some have standard low, medium, and high settings, while others let you set a precise temperature.

An electric griddle offers a flat cooking surface with constant heat that is distributed carefully and thoroughly throughout. Controls let you set the cooking temperature to low, medium, or high or to a specific temperature, depending on the model.

Griddle Combinations

There are a number of griddles available that offer more than just a single flat surface; some griddles offer the option of a grill plate, and some offer a griddle plate, a grill plate, a contact grill and a Panini press! The grill plate will leave those beautiful and tasty grill marks when you want to make a steak or burger, and the Panini and contact griddles will offer a lid that closes down upon them to cook that way.

Now that you understand the two basic types of griddles, let us look at what sort of features griddles have to offer so you can begin to think about what would make the best electric griddle to suit your specific cooking needs.

Things to Consider When Purchasing an Electric Griddle

Size
Griddles will often be rather large in size, giving you a generous, flat surface upon which you can cook a number of items. Some allow you to cook several portions of food at once, while some are only suitable for small amounts at a time. With a contact grill, you can use a small amount when you want it and have a big grill when you need it just by opening up the lid and cooking it flat.
Surface
Preferably, you are going to want to look for a griddle that boasts a non-stick surface. This is often what makes a griddle just as good, if not better, than a standard frying pan. Since griddles are most often used for things that have a tendency to stick, like eggs and pancakes, this is definitely something to keep in mind. Also, nonstick griddles make for the easiest clean up!
Grill Inserts
Grill inserts are of course optional, but some griddles do come with the choice to slide on a grill insert in order to create those pretty little grill marks that are so visually pleasing.
Temperature Controls
Some griddles will afford you the luxury of choosing a precise temperature setting for the surface to heat to. This helps to ensure that you are getting your food cooked exactly the way you want it to be cooked. Others will provide general heat settings like the typical low, medium and high settings. A few even have “warm” options and “sear” options that will further help you customize how you are cooking your food.
Dual Thermostats
While there are many griddles that have a single heat control, or thermostat, there are several models that have a really neat option for dual control or dual thermostats. Dual thermostats allow you to divide the griddle up into two portions and have one cooking at one temperature, and the other cooking at another. This lets you heat one half of the griddle at a time so that you can be sure the heat controls are where you like them before you begin cooking foods that require two different temperatures right beside one another. This is an incredibly useful function!
Drip Trays
A drip tray is an important facet of any electric griddle. When fat cooks down from foods like sausage, hamburger meat or bacon, it liquefies and can create quite the mess if not dealt with properly. A drip tray serves to catch that grease instead of letting it pool on the cooking surface by way of drain holes or a slanted cooking surface that channels the grease into the tray. There are also ones with gutters around the edges to collect the by-products.
Warming Drawer
A few electric griddles will offer a warming drawer that keeps food warm while the rest of it is being cooked!
Easy Clean  Up
This is an important one, too, as one of the major perks of owning an electric griddle lies in the simple cleanup process. Griddles with nonstick coatings are super easy to clean, and what make it even better are those that can go into the dishwasher just by removing the heating element.
Price
While there are more inexpensive ones, if you want a few neat features to go with your electric griddle, it may be worth it to look into ones at a higher price range. Regardless, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will find one within your budget.

The Best Electric Griddle Choices

Okay. So now you have a basic idea regarding what features are potentially available on different types of griddles. Below, I have compiled a list of some of the best electric griddles you can find, simplifying the buying process for you!

Presto 07061 22-inch Electric Griddle With Removable Handles

The Presto 07061 22-inch Electric Griddle With Removable Handles is an electric griddle that is large and capable of cooking enormous amounts of food at once. This 22-inch griddle can accommodate the cooking of meals for a large family every day or making it easier to cook for parties. It has a long-lasting nonstick coating which helps with the cleanup process, and I have never had anything stick to its surface. With the included Control Master heating technology, it heats up the entire cooking surface quickly and evenly every time so that you are guaranteed your food will cook easily and thoroughly.

For those perfectionist home cooks who want their pancakes to be perfect, it is worth knowing that this griddle has tiny diamond shaped textures on it, supposed to help with the nonstick element. These little markings do sometimes transfer onto the food, but other than that, you will barely notice them.

All-Clad 99014 GT Electric Griddle with 20 x 13-Inch Hard Anodized Cooking Surface

This is one of the best electric griddles when it comes to that convenient dual cooking surface I mentioned earlier. It has two thermostats that let you set specific temperatures in order to cook two different foods that require different temperature settings at once. It is made of the highest quality metal components as this company has a long history of metalworking, so they really know their stuff. With the included stainless steel detachable drip tray and its nonstick properties, cleanup is an absolute breeze and you will be done before you know it.

Some people on a budget might be a bit off put by the price point. In my opinion, a high quality griddle might cost a little extra, but it is worth it especially when you consider the dual thermostat technology–it is like getting two griddles in one.

Cuisinart GR-4NR 5-in-1 Griddler

This one is a real doozy! The Cuisinart GR-4NR 5-in-1 Griddler, Silver, Red Dials comes with 5 separate ways to cook your food: a griddle, a grill, a griddle/grill combination, a contact grill and a Panini press! It really can do it all and you would think that due to its versatile nature it might be hard to clean. Fortunately, as it is nonstick and each griddle plate is replaceable and dishwasher safe, all you have to do is pop them out of the unit, use the dishwasher-safe scraping tool to remove any residue, and then pop them into the dishwasher!

This one takes a little time to heat up, but with everything that it can do, I truly do not think that this is much of a downside in the slightest!

BLACK+DECKER GD2011B Family Size Griddle

This electric griddle boasts a variable temperature setting that lets you choose the precise degrees with which you will heat your food. Choose from a low, warm setting to keep food toasty while you cook, or hike it all the way up to 400 deegrees Fahrenheit! With a temperature range that broad, it is difficult to think of a food that cannot be cooked on this griddle. The BLACK+DECKER GD2011B Family Size Griddle, Black also comes with that nifty detachable drip tray and is coated with a nonstick formula that makes cleaning up after use simple as can be.

The only concern I have about this griddle is that it has a rather small drip tray. This is hardly a real downside, though, because it doesn’t take long at all to empty and it isn’t a once-every-ten-seconds kind of thing.

Oster CKSTGR3007-ECO DuraCeramic Reversible Grill and Griddle

This is one of the best electric griddles in my opinion. The Oster CKSTGR3007-ECO DuraCeramic Reversible Grill and Griddle, Black comes with what they call Dura Ceramic technology. This is a ceramic heating surface that is ultra-nonstick, lasting up to 4 times longer than average nonstick griddles.

The ceramic component also helps to spread the heat out more evenly from its source, absolutely assuring that your food will be heated evenly and perfectly every time. The ceramic heating also means that your food will cook up to 20 percent faster than it would on other griddles! It has a large cooking surface on top of that, making it so you can cook a lot of food all at once, and the cleanup is super simple since it is nonstick and is dishwasher friendly.

The only real drawback to this is that it takes a bit of time to preheat, but I have found that spending that time preparing the rest of my meal such as my salad and vegetables fills that time quite well and speeds up the meal preparation process entirely.
